When to have acupuncture during pregnancy

Supporting Your Pregnancy Journey with Acupuncture

Pregnancy is a time of incredible transformation, and while it’s a magical journey, it also comes with physical and emotional shifts that can feel overwhelming. Acupuncture is a gentle, natural way to support your body (and mind) through every trimester—helping with everything from morning sickness to labor preparation.

So, when should you have acupuncture during pregnancy? The answer: anytime!

Each stage of pregnancy brings different needs, and acupuncture meets you exactly where you are.

First Trimester (0-12 weeks): Soften the First Trimester Blows

The first trimester is when everything is forming—your baby, the placenta, and your body’s new hormonal balance. It’s also when many women experience fatigue, nausea, and heightened emotions. Acupuncture during this phase is all about nurturing the nervous system and supporting fetal development.

We recommend more frequent treatments (weekly or biweekly) to help:

  • Reduce nausea and vomiting

  • Support energy levels and reduce fatigue

  • Minimise stress and anxiety

  • Encourage optimal blood flow to the uterus

  • Balance hormones to help sustain pregnancy

Second Trimester (13-28 weeks): As Needed Support

The second trimester is often called the "golden phase"—morning sickness eases, energy returns, and your body is adjusting to its new normal. During this time, acupuncture can be used as needed to maintain balance and address any discomforts, such as:

  • Lower back pain and pelvic discomfort

  • Sleep disturbances

  • Digestive issues (like reflux or constipation)

  • Stress relief

Many women love using this phase to stay in tune with their body and continue feeling strong and supported.

Third Trimester (29 weeks-birth): Preparing for Labour

As your body prepares for birth, acupuncture shifts into support mode for labor preparation. From 34-35 weeks onward, we recommend coming in weekly to:

  • Encourage optimal fetal positioning

  • Support ripening of the cervix

  • Prepare the pelvic floor and ligaments for birth

  • Reduce stress and anxiety leading into labor

  • Naturally encourage labor if needed (especially after 40 weeks)

This final stretch is about ensuring a smooth transition into birth—physically, mentally, and emotionally.

Final Thoughts

Acupuncture isn’t just for pregnancy discomfort—it’s a proactive tool to help you feel strong, balanced, and connected to your body. Whether you’re early in your pregnancy or approaching labor, acupuncture supports you every step of the way.
