Rosacea is a skin condition that causes swelling and redness on a person’s face. While it is often mild and not a cause for concern, it can potentially progress to become a more severe and painful medical problem
Rosacea patients generally have sensitive skin and a tendency to blush or flush easily.
This inflammatory condition is triggered occasionally by alcohol, spicy food or the “heat” of emotional stress. If left untreated, it can become permanent overtime.
Chinese medicine is an excellent, natural alternative to treat and heal this disease.
According to Chinese medicine, healthy bodies circulate blood and energy (qi) freely. Rosacea is said to be a result of energetic imbalance in the body and numerous factors including an inappropriate diet, stress and fatigue.
We understand Rosacea is a ‘heat condition’ whereby heat is trapped in the lung, stomach or spleen systems, causing heat to rise to face and cause inflammation.
There are three methods of which practitioners of Traditional Chinese Medicine treat rosacea.
Acupuncture, herbs, and diet.
Acupuncture is one of the best ways to effectively clear this “heat” to reduce symptoms of rosacea. Acupuncture needling works by dispersing the heat and qi blockage to rebalance the body’s acidity levels. It can also work by helping the patient to manage and release any stress, which may have contributed to the condition. Acupuncture treatment should begin with a detailed consultation in order to pinpoint your imbalance at the root of the problem and then a customized treatment plan to address it.
Along with acupuncture, herbs may be used to help to rebalance the body’s systems. Many of the herbs that are used internally in Traditional Chinese Medicine can also be applied topically. These topical treatments also help to clear “heat” while also healing and soothing the irritation.
Lifestyle changes are also highly recommended: avoiding hot and spicy foods, eliminating wheat and dairy from the diet, introducing vitamins A, B, C, D, E and zinc supplements, and consuming more fiber and antioxidants. It is also encouraged to avoid common rosacea triggers such as heat, chemicals and alcohol. Water is essential for cleansing the body, so remember to drink at least 2L a day!
Stress and anxiety can also trigger and worsen rosacea. Tai Chi and Qi Gong are traditional exercises that incorporate movement, breathing, and meditation which are great for reducing stress and calming the emotions.
Bottom-line
Using a combination of acupuncture, herbs, and a proper diet can help to keep symptoms of rosacea at bay.
